School of Fashion Design

Celebrating over 90 years of excellence in fashion education, The School of Fashion Design is the only educational institution in New England dedicated exclusively to the study of fashion design. SFD provides students with a solid foundation in apparel design and construction, and the skills required for a successful career in fashion. Our technical Certificate program is taught by experts in the field of fashion design. Students may take courses toward the Certificate or on a class-by-class basis to fill professional education interests. For creatives and textile arts enthusiasts, SFD offers workshops in various fiber arts such as weaving, lace making, embroidery, millinery, upcycling, and more. As an SFD student, you will join a diverse community of emerging designers. Our studios are filled with recent high school graduates, students from nearby colleges enriching their education with fashion, and working professionals embarking on a new career path. SFD faculty and students are active partners in our local community, collaborating regularly with organizations and businesses through internships, exhibitions, field trips, and special events. Our reputation for excellence is on display each time our students show their work at fashion shows and exhibits throughout the year. With an SFD Certificate in Fashion Design, our alumni have enjoyed fashion careers with Adidas, Coldwater Creek, J. Jill, New Balance, PUMA, Ralph Lauren, Talbots, Timberland, TJX Companies, and more. Our alumni are designers and costumers for stage and screen, while others have found success launching their own label. Our varied class levels and flexible schedules are designed to meet the needs and profiles of all students. Artists Take the Street brings together artists, artisans, and musicians for a lively, open-air celebration of creativity. Stroll along Pleasant Street and experience live art demonstrations, enjoy musical performances, and discover unique, handcrafted work.
This event is perfect for all ages, with interactive art activities including face painting and balloon twisting to keep kids (and kids at heart) engaged and entertained.

Students are also trained in lining, pressing, detailing, and finishing! Students learn how to create block drafts, slopers, and patterns. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:00 PM - 2:15 PM&nbsp;or&nbsp;7:45 PM – 10:00&nbsp;PM</li><li><a href="https://schooloffashiondesign.asapconnected.com/#CourseID=152096" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Fashion Sketching 1</a> teaches students the necessary principles and techniques of fashion sketching to create their own fashion plates. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30 PM - 4:45 PM or&nbsp;06:00 PM – 08:15 PM</li><li><a href="https://schooloffashiondesign.asapconnected.com/#CourseID=152110" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">History of Costume</a> dives into costumes from ancient to modern times, with a focus on contemporary design and theatrical costuming. Students will study the fabrics, colors, styles, cultural and psychological impacts of these garments throughout history.
