Five Things You Need to Know Today, Jan. 19

Watch your step on the ice.

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 19. Here are five things you need to know:

Tread lightly this morning : Sleet and freezing rain all night has led to icy conditions this morning. Take some time to lay down some rock salt on the drive and walkways before leaving for work. And give yourself extra time to get there. There’s a good chance we’ll get another inch of snow this afternoon as well, even though temperatures are expected to peak above freezing.

Tough choices for Malden’s schools: The School Committee’s Finance Subcommittee had a very sobering meeting with Superintendent Sidney Smith. The system is facing an $8.2 million deficit for next year, and that may mean drastic cutbacks. How bad? There was serious discussion about teacher layoffs, Kindergarten fees for all residents, and options that include closing the Forestdale School or firing all of the library and guidance staff at the elementary schools. Nothing’s been decided, and these options were given to show the type of actions that may be needed to close the gap. Check back later this morning for a full story about the meeting and the options outlined.
