Malden Gets $32K For Recycling Efforts

The city was awarded for implementing policies that encourage and optimize recycling and waste reduction.

Malden received $32,000 in grants related to recycling efforts, the Baker-Polito Administration announced Wednesday morning.

Malden was one of 166 communities which qualified for the “Recycling Dividends Program," which rewards municipalities for policies that encourage and optimize recycling and waste reduction. Communities that receive money must reinvest it in recycling programs.

The Sustainable Materials Recovery Program grants were given to "217 municipalities and regional solid waste districts to help maximize their recycling, composting and waste reduction programs," a release said. The grants totaled nearly $1.6 million.

“These recycling grants will help the Commonwealth’s communities continue their work of responsibly protecting our natural resources and the public health,” said Governor Charlie Baker in the release. “The success we achieve reducing the waste stream across Massachusetts begins at the local level, and I am proud we are able to help communities make critical investments in their recycling programs.”

“These grants will help local officials reach out to residents and small businesses to increase their participation and raise awareness about these sustainable programs," said Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito.
