Malden Police Announce Drug Giveback Program

On Oct. 22, residents may drop off unwanted prescription drugs at the police station.

MALDEN, MA – The Malden Police Department and DEA will hold a drug giveback program on October 22 for residents to turn in unwanted prescription substances.

The event is the department's 12th Drug Take Back Day in six years, giving the public ample opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by disposing of unwanted, expired or unused drugs safely. Pills may be discarded in the front lobby of the Malden Police Department at 200 Pleasant St. Liquids and needles are prohibited.

The service is free and anonymous.

According to an announcement, about 350 tons of prescription drugs were dropped off at more than 5,000 DEA and law enforcement sites in September. The initiative was established to address the health hazards that prescription drugs pose if not carefully monitored.

In addition, residents are advised that the old methods of getting rid of pills – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose significant safety and health risks.
