Malden Public Library Receives Charitable Grant

The money will fund a new microfilm reader that will allow digital output in a variety of mediums, as well as enhance text and photos.

MALDEN, MA – The Malden Public Library was recently awarded a grant by the Piccolo Family Charitable Foundation for a new microfilm reader.

The $9,195 in grant money will fund the purchase of a Scanpro 3000, which allows for digital output in various mediums, including PDF, digital word search, resident internet links and enhanced digital imaging of degraded text and photos.

The equipment, utilized by the top libraries and universities in the country, will expand the scope of local researchers and save library resources such as paper and print toner. Now, students and residents will be able to easily create booklets for projects with the use of local press clippings and email PDFs to their personal accounts for better print quality.

Ahead of the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the library will use the new equipment for an upcoming exhibit about Malden's response to the attack as seen through the local press. When it's finished, the exhibit will be uploaded digitally to the library's website as an educational tool.

The donation was presented to Malden Public Library Director Dora St. Martin and Board of Trustees President John Tramondozzi by C. Henry Kezer, president of the charity, and Laura Hodgin, treasurer.
