Malden Softball Wins Regionals, Head to Division 1 State Championship

The team had a major comeback in the bottom of the last official inning, tying it up 4-4 . A run sealed the win during extra innings.

Malden High School's varisty softball team made history again Tuesday night, beating out Bridgewater-Raynham 5-4 during tense extra innings to secure the team's first ever regional championship title. 

Player Emily Moran scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, when teammate Melissa Light's hit to the pitcher's mound was mishandled, allowing Moran to cross home plate and break a 4-4 tie.

"It felt soooo good!" Moran said of the victory over Twitter. "I'm so happy we came back and I'm the happiest person to have scored the winning run!!!"

But for most of the game, the team trailed 0-4, until last minute runs in the bottom of the sixth tied changed the dynamic of the game. 

‘‘A lot of people thought it was over,’’ Coach John Furlong told the Boston Globe. ‘‘I told the girls at the beginning of the sixth inning, ‘We’re going to score five,’ and we scored four to tie it.

My daughter Bridget (Furlong) hit an absolute bomb to tie it. That’s a good enough present for me for Father’s Day.’’

The team will now battle for the state championship at Worcester State University against Milford Saturday. 

Mayor Gary Christenson also declared Friday, June 15 "Blue and Gold Day," in honor of the softball team. 

Christenson said more details about the event would come this week. 

"I never thought I'd ever see another game ," Christenson said. "Whew."
