Phedora will join other students from around the area to attend weekly classes at the New England Aquarium and receive training at a local pool. During April school vacation the group will travel to Miami, FL, board the Research Vessel Coral Reef II, and cross the Gulf Stream to the islands of Bimini, Bahamas.

Students will use the skills they learned during the pool sessions to complete their PADI Open Water scuba certification. In addition to the scuba certification New England Aquarium staff will lead interactive educational activities and give presentations on subjects related to marine biology, conservation, natural history and fish identification. The group will also be visiting the Shark Research Lab in Bimini, snorkeling in mangroves (fish nurseries) and conducting beach seines to compare species found in diverse habitats.

Malden High School Science Teacher Shauna Campbell will serve as Phedora’s mentor for this incredibly exciting program.
