Total Performance Sports Moves to Malden
The gym was rated best of Boston in 2012 and has been featured in both Men's and Women's Health Magazines.
One of the most intense gyms on the Eastern seabord — with the accolades to prove it — is now calling Malden home.
Total Performance Sports, previously based in Everett since 1999, moved into a new 10,000 square foot facility located at 150 Charles Street. The gym’s owner CJ Murphy told Patch that when he was looking for locations to move his business, Malden seemed like a great fit for a number of reasons.
“Malden has a very good community, and the demographics of the city fit well with the demographic we are looking to attract for the business,” Murphy told Patch. “We attract a different kind of member, and the people in Malden would be good for us.”

Murphy added that Mayor Gary Christenson was also very helpful with the move, and that Malden’s close proximity to the T made it an attractive destination.
The new facility in Malden is also better for the gym’s training methods, which Murphy described as anything but your “average gym.” In Everett the gym had 30,000 square feet of space, and was located on the 3rd or 4th floor of a building. Murphy told Patch that the 10,000 square foot space in Malden is a much better size for the gym. It’s also on the ground floor, which is better for lifting heavy weights — and at Total Performance Sports, they lift heavy weights.

“We’re not for everybody, we’re for people serious about strength training,” Murphy told Patch.
In fact, many members of Total Performance Sports are active in competitive weightlifting and strongman competitions. To service its clients, and to uphold its reputation as a premium service gym, TPS features state-of-the-art equipment, an indoor turf area for conditioning and agility work, and areas for yoga, pilates, powerlifting and strongman training.
Although TPS is for people who are serious about training, Murphy said that newcomers should not be intimidated because the gym has a team of expert personal trainers.
“If someone goes to a chain gym and hire a personal trainer they will get someone with virtually no experience. We require a different level of employee to work for us. Employees are required to have a certain background to work for us and must have the right certifications,” Murphy said.
Murphy credits the gym’s staff for the gym’s accolades, such as being rated Best of Boston in 2012, being named one of the 20 best gyms in America by Men’s Health twice and best of the best by Women’s Health magazine in 2013.
“If you’re looking to get results and do the work that’s needed to make changes and see results we’re the only place in town.”
Although TPS just moved to Malden, Murphy said he is not actively searching for new employees.
