Whiz Kids of the Week: Artistic Volunteers

Rose Nyugen, Lisa Leong, Tracy Tran, Athena Armanda and Kaitlyn Thomas spent their summer beautifying Malden.

If you notice the walk to has some extra color to it this week, you may be looking at the handiwork of some local teens who gave back to the city this summer.

Malden High students Rose Nyugen, Lisa Leong, Tracy Tran, Athena Armanda and Kaitlyn Thomas gave up precious vacation hours to volunteer with art teacher Mary Anne Seager and paint two utility boxes near the school's campus.

One utility box, in front of the city fire department, portrays a 9/11 memorial, as well as a portrayal of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters in the Catholic faith.

The students worked on the box for about a month, Seager said.

“They are doing a really great job,” she said. “When people walk buy, they shout out that they love it, stop and talk with the kids.”
