Winner's Math: How Malden Stacks up to Boston's Winning Ways

Boston's decade of sports dominance has been incredible, but Malden's had a year for the ages, too.

Just how impressive have Boston’s four major professional sports team been? Consider some of the following numbers:

  • In the past 10 years, Boston teams are 7-9 in finals appearances, sporting a .777 win percentage.
  • That’s seven out of 39 possible titles since the Patriots won their first Super Bowl in January 2002.
  • Malden Twitterer @markrotoole pointed this out: Now that the Bruins have won the Stanley Cup, the New England Patriots are the Boston-based team with the longest title drought. Seriously, they haven’t won in six years.
  • With 9-2 odds, the Red Sox are the American League favorites to appear in the World Series. If they were to win the championship, that would make eight titles in 40 chances over 10 years. Boston teams would have won 20 percent of all titles awarded in that time.

It’s truly impressive stuff, but Malden’s students had quite a year of accomplishments on and off the field of play:

  • Malden Catholic won the .
  • Pop Warner's Midget Cheerleaders the national championship.
  • The Malden High School Marching Band in their division in the New England Scholastic Band Association Regional Competition.
  • The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School’s swim team went for undefeated seasons.
  • Mystic Valley's fifth and sixth grade boys basketball team won itsleague championship
  • The MHS UN Club scored big in competition.
  • The MHS Play Production company to the state finals.
  • The Blue and Gold newspaper won a slew of school newspaper awards.
