Local Teen Bites Off Police Officer's Ear: DA

Police said Emma Wiley, of Marblehead, bit off a piece of a Salem police officer's ear. Wiley pleaded not guilty to a host of charges.

SALEM, MA — A Marblehead woman bit off a piece of a police officer's ear in an altercation over the weekend, authorities said. Emma Wiley, 19, of Maple Street, was charged with a host of crimes and ordered held without bail Monday.

Salem police said they were called to a restaurant early Sunday after Wiley was involved in a disturbance outside the eatery. As a female officer was trying to place Wiley in her cruiser, Wiley bit off a piece of the officer's ear, according Essex County Assistant District Attorney Megan MacKenzie. Doctors tried to reattach the ear but were unsuccessful.

Wiley pleaded not guilty to the charges during her arraignment in Salem District Court Monday.

"Judge Allan Swan found Wiley to be a danger," MacKenzie said in a statement. The judge ordered Wiley to be held without bail. She's due back in court Aug. 30 for a probable cause hearing. Wiley has legal representation, according to MacKenzie.
