📰 News we're reading

1. Conservancy airs concerns as Rail Trail work advances (marbleheadcurrent.org) — Marblehead is advancing major upgrades to its 4.5-mile Rail Trail, with new designs, drainage work, and safer crossings under active review and public meetings expected this fall. As plans evolve, the Marblehead Conservancy is pressing the town to preserve the trail's rustic, natural feel and avoid asphalt, while funding from grants and federal aid shapes a long, multi-phase construction timeline.

2. Friends of Marblehead Hockey launches $25M campaign for indoor rink at Y (marbleheadcurrent.org) — Marblehead hockey supporters are launching a $25 million campaign to build an NHL-sized indoor rink and new parking structure at the Lynch-van Otterloo YMCA, giving local youth and school teams guaranteed home ice nearby. Although the Y's campus sits just over the Salem line, the project is designed around Marblehead players' needs, aiming to cut long drives for ice time and create new public skating and recreation options.

3. Epstein Hillel turns the page after last year's fiscal uncertainty (jewishjournal.org) — Epstein Hillel School in Marblehead has reopened this fall as a smaller pre-K–6 program after a major fundraising drive helped it avoid closure and close its middle school. Leaders describe tighter budgets, reduced staff, and multi-grade classrooms, but also strong community support, small class benefits, and new strategic planning to keep a Jewish day school option available for families north of Boston.

4. Glover plans hit a speed bump (marbleheadweeklynews.com) — Plans to redevelop the historic Glover estate into 140 apartments, including 44 units in Marblehead, hit a pause as the Planning Board sought more data on traffic, access, and drainage. While officials praised the design and preservation of the General John Glover Farmhouse, they continued the hearing so town staff and neighbors can fully review the complex, multi-town proposal.
