A Day of Remembrance, Strength, and Unity
A hats-off message to Medford in the wake of the Marathon Monday events.
As you probably know, Marathon bombing victim Krystle Campbell was from Medford. Krystle was laid to rest on Monday, and I continue to keep her and her family in my prayers.
As you also probably know, the Westboro Baptist Church intended to picket Krystle's funeral because, in their minds, "God sent the bombs."
Medford is a tough, working-class community, and I am proud to call it my hometown. On Monday, hundreds (if not thousands) of people from Medford and the surrounding area formed a silent human chain to keep the WBC nuts away from the services. My sister, Jordana Connor, and my father, Brian Connor, were part of this show of strength. My Uncle Gary also returned to his hometown all the way from Kennebunk, Maine (with his oldest sons, Donovan and Camden Connor) to be a part of this.
I've always been proud to be from Medford, but I was especially proud on Monday. To come together to peacefully fight hate at a time when we all need to heal is truly inspiring. Many people from Medford (myself included) would rather make these people eat their signs, but the community's restraint speaks to Medford's unity in this difficult time.
Medford is one of many communities embodying the mantra of Boston Strong, and I’m honored to see the city serve as a shining example of hope and strength in the aftermath of these cowardly acts.
