Local and Not-So-Local Gluten Free Sightings
Gluten-free sightings in Medford and beyond...
This past weekend was a whirlwind of activities for us, which included some gluten free sightings both near and far:
1. True Grounds Cafe in Ball Square in Somerville (http://www.truegrounds.com/): I recently re-discovered this hidden jewel, as I was grabbing lunch on Friday afternoon, and was pleasantly surprised to see some gluten-free treats in the pastry case, or rather ATOP the pastry case (way to go with managing cross-contamination, True Grounds!). The treats were mostly from Strawberry Moon in Stoneham (www.strawmoon.com) and they looked delectable. I will be sure to bring the Gluten-Free Goddessette over soon to taste their wares.
2. Not Your Average Joe's at Station Landing (www.nyaj.com): Ruthie has enjoyed Joe's gluten-free menu for several years now, and they have recently added gluten-free hamburger rolls to their menu. What was extra special about our last visit was our waitress taking the extra care to give Ruthie a roll with Joe's oil (sans bread crumbs) for dipping. Our waitress also told us about a great gluten-free appetizer, the guacamole which comes with gluten-free chips. We'll be saving that taste-test for our next dining out experience, as Ruthie was having way too much fun eating the bread and oil (the signature treat at Joe's that she had not been able to partake in for three years!).

3. Modern Pastry in Medford Square (http://www.modernpastry.com/): Thanks to reader Lorraine Biggins, The Goddess has learned that Modern Pastry has gluten-free muffins and treats. Ruthie has her end-of-year school breakfast on Monday at Mystic Valley, giving us the perfect excuse to pick up a muffin for her to enjoy with her classmates.
4. The Captain Daniel Packard Inne in Mystic, Connecticut (http://www.danielpacker.com/): We took a family trip to Mystic to meet up with my brother, who recently returned from living in Japan, and had a fantastic dinner at this inn. The Packard boasts a gluten-free menu, which offered many of the same items as the non-GF one, and the staff was very accommodating and understanding of Ruthie's allergy, making sure bread baskets were strategically placed away from her, etc. The biggest hit was the flourless chocolate torte that Ruthie and Zoe shared for dessert.
