Lunch in Medford Square

Visited 3 Medford Square restaurants--one was closed until 4:00 but the staff were charming; one was open for lunch but apparently not oen to us; the third was delightful, both for food and service.

On Thursday, my daughter, her colleague--also a friend of mine--and I were in the Square for lunch.  We've eaten at many Medford Square restaurants, and regularly have delicious take-out from Sei Bar and Tom Yum Koong.  We wanted to try Caroll's, but they were closed.  Two staffmembers were on hand and each advised us that the restaurant would be open for dinner, and warmly invited us back at 4:00.  Next we went to Chung Ki Wa, open but with no other guests.  We asked the one staffperson we saw if they were open and she replied gruffly in the affirmative.  We were seated at a table that had 2 menus and when we asked for a third, it was slammed down onto the table.  We asked two more questions and received two surly responses.  Now, I am in my 70's.  Of course my companions and I have experienced rudeness over the years.  But truly, only once in my life have I been so blatantly discourteously treated: that was during a lunch counter sit-in.  All three of us are African-American.  We were so amazed at the hostility we received that we just sat silently until someone said, "I'm going to have to just walk out of here."  We suddenly realized that we were not going to continue to be disrespected, and left.  I looked for the woman to tell her why we were leaving, but she never reappeared.  Still hungry, we hesitantly walked into the Chilli Garden.  There we had delicious food and outstanding service.  We look forward to returning again.
