Gilchrist, Mustangs Slam Somerville

Medford's Danny Gilchrist had a monster day at the plate for Medford in a 20-0 win over visiting GBL rival Somerville.

It was the Danny Gilchrist show on Tuesday afternoon, as the senior third baseman blasted three home runs and racked up nine RBI in Medford's 20-0 thumping of Greater Boston League rival Somerville at Playstead Park.

Gilchrist sent a two-run home run over the fence in his first at bat followed by a grand slam in a seven-run second inning and a three run blast in the fourth inning.

"I'm really impressed with the way Danny Gilchrist is showing the leadership with the bat and on the mound," said head coach Mike Nestor. "It's nice. We hit the fastball. We were aggressive and we didn't wait to get deep into counts. We attacked the fastball and that's what put us up."

Chris Salvati allowed just one hit over four innings for the win as the game was shortened due to the mercy rule.

Salvati, Gilchrist, Sean Doncaster, Andrew Ferrazani and John Lavoie each scored three runs for Medford (6-1).

The Mustangs now head into a tough stretch of GBL competition, starting with Cambridge (5-2) on Thursday, followed by a game Tuesday against Everett (4-0) and next Thursday against Malden (4-2), the only team to have beaten Medford this year.

"It seems like we're coming around," said Nestor. "We're heading in the right direction going into the next three games against tough GBL opponents. It would be nice if we can ahead in the GBL a little bit."
