Dear Neighbors,
I would like to thank those that disagree with me for speaking out. Too often tough topics are not talked about in this city. Tough Choices are here and this city's leadership with the help of it's people are going to have to make them. As anyone can see who follows my blogs or watches me at the council meetings I am not afraid to take on tough topics.
The U.S. Treasury is going to go into default yet again on October 18th (less than one month from today) unless we yest again borrow money from our citizens in the form of bonds or from other countries. Medford has been heavily dependent on grants from the federal government to supplement our needs, what is Medford going to do in these out years when we can not "find" Federal or State grant money to make up for real estate tax deficits.
Someone in this city is not going to get what they want and we as a city need to figure out how we are going to manage it. Will we say no to the police personnel for the school system. Will we say no to the Medford Square garage for the Brooks Estate. What of the Water Taxi? Will we neglect the Police/Fire Building to keep teacher/child ratio levels even? It is a fact that we would have to vote for a Prop 2 1/2 override to pay for everything we want in this city. Who is going to get what they need or are those with influence going to get what they want?
By now most of you know me and why many may disagree with my positions, I have laid them out by priority. First, a New Police/Fire Station, more officers from 96 to 130 (creating a buffer for retirees and medicals), then pay to have an independent inspection of the high school and list fixes from greatest to lowest needs. Third, city sidewalk maintenance, double poles and weeds splitting pavement needs to be addressed.
Who among the candidates has the strength to say what needs to be said and voted what needs to be voted on. I do.
Respectfully,
Jeanne Martin
Candidate for City Council
