MEDFORD, MA — The city has opened a new bike-sharing station as it continues expanding transportation options near Tufts University and the Green Line.

The Bluebikes station at 490 Boston Ave. is now available and is the first of three planned near the MBTA’s Medford/Tufts Green Line station and the university’s campus. The addition brings Medford’s total to 18 stations, the city announced.

According to the city, the new stations will provide more transportation options for residents, employees, and visitors while making it easier to connect to public transit. Medford joined the regional program in fall 2022 with three new stations at Tufts Square, Main Street at Brooks Park, and Medford Square. Those stations were funded through a joint grant secured with Malden through the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Community Connections program. A station at Wellington had previously been installed through a partnership with Everett.

The city has continued expanding the network into additional neighborhoods. In 2024, Medford announced four new stations at Carr Park, Medford High School, Winthrop Circle, and Governors Avenue at Lawrence Road near Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The additions brought the network to 15 stations and were paid for through Community Connections grants and casino mitigation funding.

Bluebikes is a regional bike-sharing system serving 13 Greater Boston communities. The system launched in 2011 and now includes more than 5,000 bicycles and nearly 600 stations. Riders can choose from traditional bicycles and pedal-assist electric bikes, which can be taken from one station and returned to another station in the network.
