Medford Eyeing Regional FD Facility With Somerville, Cambridge
The city is in early talks with officials from Somerville and Cambridge for a training academy serving all three communities.

MEDFORD, MA – Medford may join forces with Somerville and Cambridge to bring a regional Police and Fire Training Academy to the area. According to the Medford Transcript, Medford Firefighters Local 1032 President Lt. Eddie Buckley first floated the idea to Mayor Stephanie M. Burke, and the pair told the city council Tuesday that Somerville and Cambridge are interested.
The best option for the facility is near the VFW building on Mystic Avenue next to I-93. Medford representatives are currently trying to secure use of the land from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Transcript reported.
Concern over replacing the fire department's training space, as well as questions over Medford's ability to pay for new police and fire buildings and a library, has hindered the development of a new police headquarters. The Medford City Council in March voted to put the project on hold and requested that other options for funding the three projects be considered.
