Medford Hiker Rescued From NH Mountain

The 26-year-old was injured when she slipped and fell on an icy trail over the weekend.

ALTON, NH – A hiker from Medford was rescued from Mount Major in Alton, NH Saturday, officials said. Emily Field, 26, slipped and fell on an icy trail and was taken by a conservation officer to the trailhead for evaluation, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

She sustained non-life-threatening injuries and opted to seek medical treatment on her own, the department said in a press release.

Conservation officers found Field while responding to a serious incident involving a hiker from Topsfield. Matthew McGaunn, 19, suffered a serious head injury when he slid about 200 feet off the trail, officials said. He was with a group from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Outdoor Adventure Program when he fell.

"Due to the off trail location, along with steep and icy conditions, it took rescuers several hours to bush whack their way off of the mountain with McGaunn," the Fish and Game Department said. "McGaunn was delivered to the Mount Major trailhead shortly before 5 p.m. where he was met by a DHART helicopter and airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for further evaluation and treatment."

Officials urged hikers to prepare for slippery conditions and pack appropriate winter gear.
