Medford Looks To Tackle Gas Leaks
A draft ordinance from the city council would hold gas companies accountable for leaks in the city.

MEDFORD, MA – The Medford City Council this week drafted an ordinance designed to enhance accountability among gas companies for leaks in the city, according to the Medford Transcript. The draft requires companies to give the city a quarterly plan to address "aging or leaking natural gas infrastructure" and report gas leaks to administrators.
Utility companies would also be required to provide notification on leak repairs and submit information about high-priority leaks. The draft ordinance is based on a section of a similar ordinance in Boston that the courts have determined to be legal in an ongoing dispute between Boston and National Grid, the Transcript reported.
The council has asked National Grid to discuss issues ranging from gas leaks to the ongoing lockout at its Nov. 13 meeting.
