MEDFORD, MA — Medford has received a $30,000 grant through the Community Compact Program to help create a capital improvement plan for the city, according to Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn's office. Lungo-Koehn will collaborate on the plan with the Collins Center at UMass Boston, which is also helping with a review of human resources structure, policies and best practices.

The plan will outline the anticipated capital needs – items such as buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure – over the next five years. After meeting with department heads and other stakeholders, the plan will detail what needs are anticipated and a proposed funding mechanism for each, giving the City a roadmap to ensure that necessary capital needs are considered.

This plan will work closely with the pavement and sidewalk condition index study also being conducted by the city. This study is currently being procured by the City of Medford Engineering Department and will begin as soon as possible.

"Looking closely at our capital needs beyond the upcoming fiscal year is a critical step in making sure that we maintain the City’s buildings, facilities, vehicles, and other resources," Lungo-Koehn said in a statement. "This is an important step in being transparent with the community about what capital challenges lie in the future."

In addition, residents organized by local volunteer Bill Carr will help paint, restore and clean up the main lobby of Medford High School on Sunday, Feb. 23. Resources permitting, volunteers will also paint several classrooms.
