Medford Moving Forward With $5 Million Community Center Project

MEDFORD, MA — The city is moving forward with another step in the future of one of its city-owned properties.

The city posted a federal environmental and funding notice Wednesday morning for the Hegner Center Project, which would demolish the existing city-owned building at 15 Maple Park Avenue and replace it with a new multipurpose community center.

The project is estimated to cost $5 million. According to the notice, $850,000 of that total would come through federal Community Project Funding. The city has also applied for additional federal funding and state funding and said it would supplement the project with city funds if needed.

Medford plans to submit a request to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the release of the federal funds on or about Thursday, July 23.

The city determined that the project would have no significant impact on the human environment, meaning a full Environmental Impact Statement is not required under the National Environmental Policy Act. The Environmental Review Record is available for public review online and at City Hall in Room 308.

Residents, groups or agencies that want to comment on the environmental review have until July 23 to do so. Written comments can be sent to the Office of Planning, Development and Sustainability by email at or submitted in person at City Hall.

The notice is a procedural step, but it marks a significant movement for a project that could reshape a city-owned property into a new public community space.
