Medford Papa Gino's Among Closures

The pizza chain abruptly shut down dozens of locations in New England Sunday, including one in Medford Square.

MEDFORD, MA – Papa Gino's in Medford Square got the axe Sunday as the chain closed dozens of its shops across New England. Medford Mayor Stephanie M. Burke confirmed the Riverside Avenue shop was among the closures.

Dedham-based Papa Gino's Holdings Corporation, which owns Papa Gino's and D'Angelo's sandwich shop, abruptly closed 95 locations in New England. The company announced Monday it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in order to "effectively and efficiently complete the proposed sale" to a Wynnchurch Capital portfolio company.

In a statement, the company said the sale would strengthen the chain's financial resources, allowing PGHC to "remodel and modernize" its 141 company-owned restaurants in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut; open additional restaurants throughout New England; and "enhance its online ordering capabilities at all restaurants."
