Medford's Gio Getting His Giraffe After All

The 6-year-old boy who died in April will get a giant lego giraffe named after him in Assembly Row.

Giovanni Maggiore, the 6-year-old Medford boy who died in April after battling congenital heart problems, will get his giraffe, one way or another. On Wednesday, May 31, the Legoland Discovery Center in Somerville's Assembly Row will name the 20-foot Lego giraffe Gio.

Gio's name was a finalist for April the Giraffe's calf. The calf was eventually named Tajiri.

The Lego giraffe was originally named Tessie in 2014.It is made up of 22,000 DUPLO bricks.

Giraffes were one of Gio's favorite animal. His first (and favorite) pacifier? It had a giraffe attached. His Halloween costume? A giraffe.

Gio was a student at the Brooks School and is mother teaches at the Columbus School.
