Mustangs Girls Lacrosse Wins Third Straight GBL Title

Just as every business plan requires investors, every coaching strategy demands the players buy in as well.

That’s precisely what the Medford High girls lacrosse team did last night. The Mustangs wrapped up their third consecutive Greater Boston League title with a 17-2 thrashing of arch-rivals Malden on an overcast Pink-Out night at Edgerly Field. Medford completed a season sweep over the Golden Tornadoes.

“This is what I’ve been preaching to them all along,” said Medford High head coach Matt Galusi. “This is what they’re capable of It was a total team effort. This is what we have to do every time out.”

All the monies raised through last night’s game will go to the Susan G. Komen Fund for breast cancer research. 

The Mustangs (9-1) lived up to their name and were off to the races as soon as the game began, running out to a 12-0 lead at the break and holding the Golden Tornadoes without a single shot at the net during the first half.

“We executed our game plan almost flawlessly,” said Galusi. “It would have been great to get a shutout, but two goals is two goals.”

Junior captain Olivia Timmins led the way once again with 5 goals, while Mady Forcier, Katherine Timmins and Leigh Williams scored two goals each as well.

Both Malden (2-5) tallies were notched by Anita Caceda.

“This is the way it usually goes here,” lamented Malden head coach Julie Briggs. “(Medford) girls play all the time, my girls are seasonal players ... I’m proud of them, they got out there, they came to play and they did a good job. They’re very supportive of each other, and above all else, they’re ladies on and off the field.”

Medford never allowed the outcome to come into question, and their heavy lead at halftime was more than enough to earn the win.

“We dominated the midfield and we shut girls down on defense,” Galusi said. “Everybody played a great game. It doesn’t matter who your playing, you still have to go out there and play the game.”

The only real question after the Mustangs dominant showing in the first half, was whether or not they could sustain the tempo throughout the remaining minutes.

“(With a big lead) it’s tough to stay focused,” Galusi noted. “In the past, we would play sloppy, but we came out tonight just smoking.”
