Tufts University Dining Workers Vote To Unionize

Workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of making an area hospitality workers' union their exclusive collective bargaining agent.

MEDFORD, MA – Dining services workers at Tufts University voted to unionize Tuesday. The results were overwhelmingly in favor, with 127 voting for unionization, 19 voting against, 11 challenging and one ballot voided, according to the Tufts Daily.

Once the results of the election are certified, the school will have to recognize UNITE HERE Local 26 as the exclusive collective bargaining entity of full- and part-time dining workers. An election was called after 75 percent of dining staff signed a petition that was sent to the National Labor Relations Board earlier this month.

UNITE HERE Local 26 represents hospitality workers in New England, including those at Harvard University who went on strike and forced a new contract in 2016.
