Tufts University Investigating Reported Blackface Photo

University officials said the school received reports that a student posted a photo of herself in blackface on Instagram.

MEDFORD, MA – Officials at Tufts University are investigating an alleged photo showing a student in blackface. In a statement Thursday, President Anthony Monaco said the school received reports that a student posted a photo of herself in blackface on Instagram.

"Blackface has a long history of being used to demean, belittle, and objectify people of color in the United States and worldwide," Monaco wrote. "I condemn this behavior in the most unambiguous terms possible."

The student could face a "range of possible disciplinary measures" based on the outcome of the investigation, a school spokesperson told the Boston Globe. The student was not publicly identified.

"Racist expressions such as these are profoundly offensive and deeply hurtful," Monaco's statement continued. "They contradict our values as a welcoming and inclusive community, and have no place at Tufts."
