VIDEO: Boys Hockey Falls on Senior Night

In the final home game of the season, Medford boys hockey dropped by Plymouth North, 5-3.

As the hockey family was celebrating the last game for its senior players Saturday at LoConte Rink, the final score of the contest almost didn't matter—almost.

There were plenty of smiles to go around after the Mustangs fell to Plymouth North, 5-3; but there was disappointment, too.

"We didn't come out with the win that we wanted, but we still put a good game together," senior captain Mike Gendreau said. "I'm happy tonight about the way we played, but I'm still disappointed that we didn't win."

Gendreau and his skaters played with blistering intensity throughout the game, although penalties hurt their chances of drawing the game back even once they fell behind by two goals in the second period.

Jonathan Nazarro and Chris Silva potted goals in the back-and-forth first period, which ended with the score tied, 2-2.

After two more Plymouth scores, Billy Ivey slapped home a screamer of a goal with a minute left in the second period to bring the Mustangs within one, at 4-3.

But Plymouth took advantage of one of several third-period power plays to regain the two-goal lead midway through the third.

"They played hard," Head Coach Steve DeBenedictis said. "That's a pretty good team that we played and we hung in the whole game. I'm disappointed in the result, but not the effort."

The Mustangs will test their mettle against some tough Middlesex league competition at the Burlington tournament this week before they head to the MIAA tournament.

"The schedule is sort of designed to play a little bit tougher competition as we go so we're tournament ready," DeBenedictis said. "So, we'll see."
