Weekly Sports Roundup, September 12 - September 19

A look at all the local sports action involving Medford last week.

The Medford football team recorded its first win since Nov. 13, 2009 this week, handing Newton South a 13-0 loss on Sept. 16. Nick Olivier scored the game’s first touchdown in the second quarter, after a key interception by John McGreevey. The Mustangs other TD came late in the game via Nate Clement. Defensively, senior DeStep Marcellus, junior Cedric Nicholas, senior Jesse Szykniej, senior Reginald Fleurival and junior Jeff Fargo led the way, and helped keep the Tigers off the board. Medford is now 1-1, and will take on Haverhill on Sept. 23.

Elsewhere, St. Clement (2-0) picked up its second win on the gridiron this fall, toppling Old Colony 35-6 on Sept. 17. Michael Julce ran roughshod over the OC defense, picking up 120 yards on 20 carries. Julce has eclipsed 100 yards rushing in each of the Anchormen’s contests so far this year. Quarterback Jamey Thompson threw for two touchdowns, while Alberto Lopez  and Julce collected scores on the ground.

The Anchormen face Mystic Valley on Sept. 24.

Soccer

Boys

The Mustangs improved to 2-0 this week with a 3-0 win over Northeast Metro Tech at home, on Sept. 16. Medford has outscored its opponents 7-1 over the first two games of the year. Medford returns to the pitch on Sept. 19 against Malden Catholic.

Girls

The Mustangs girls soccer team played a whopping four times last week and emerged with a respectable two-two split. First on the agenda was Lynn Tech on Sept. 12, and the Mustangs proved to be in an altogether different class, rolling to a 7-0 victory. The following day, Medford was upended by Swampscott, 1-0. Next was the Lynn English Bulldogs on Sept. 15, and it’s too bad the Mustangs can’t play all their games in the city of sin or they might go undefeated, as they handled Lynn English comfortably, winning 3-0 on Sept. 15. Finally, on Sept. 16, Medford closed out the week on a low, suffering a 4-0 loss to Arlington Catholic. Medford plays again on Sept. 19 against Malden Catholic.

The St. Clement girls soccer team played twice last week, and things started off the right way, as they pulled off a 4-2 victory over Catholic Central Small rivals Trinity Catholic on Sept. 12. But then there was Marian, on Sept. 16. St. Clement was virtually brushed aside, 6-0, at the hands of Marian, and now sits at 1-2 overall.

Volleyball

Medford played twice on the volleyball court last week, and failed to get off the ground, losing 3-0 to Pope John XXIII on Sept. 14 and Arlington Catholic on Sept. 16.

St. Clement had luck of a different kind last week, and captured both contests in which it took part. The Anchormen beat Trinity Catholic 3-0 on Sept. 15, and Mystic Valley by the same score on the 16th.

Mystic Valley Girls Soccer

The Mystic Valley Girls Soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Whittier on Sept. 12. This was the first time that the Eagles played Whittier as they are new members of Mystic Valley’s division.

It was 0-0 going into halftime. Whittier was held scoreless thanks to Jackie Lane who was called upon to make several important saves.

As the second half progressed Mystic Valley became more and more dominant and was soon rewarded for their hard work with the first goal of the season scored by Sydney Carlino.  A second goal game about ten minutes later as Samantha Rizzo finished off a solid passing sequence.

When the score moved to 2-0 the Eagles started to play with a lot more confidence and aggression. Defense put in another solid performance spearheaded by Kathryn McPherson and Jackie Lane.

The team’s next game will be played on Wednesday when they travel to Greater Lawrence.

Mystic Valley Crew

The Fall Crew program at Mystic Valley has fielded nearly 30 rowers between the Boys and Girls squads. Under the guidance of coaches Kevin Hogan, Anna Considine & Ian Faley these young student-athletes have been learning a great deal about this highly competitive sport.

The Eagles have officially entered Boys and Girls boats in the Head of the Textile River Regatta in Lowell, Massachusetts to be held on Sunday October 2nd on the Merrimack River and the New Hampshire Championships Regatta in Pembroke, New Hampshire to be held on October 16th.

There will almost certainly be a couple more races to announce shortly, but the two listed above are prestigious races. New head coach, Kevin Hogan, stated that “I’m proud our rowers will get these wonderful experiences before the spring season even rolls around”.

Mystic Valley Cross Country Loses Opening Meet

The cross country team lost their opening meet to Shawsheen Tech on Sept. 14 afternoon.  The teams both ran solid races but Shawsheen Tech just had too much depth in the end.  The boys lost by a score of 20-38 while the girls lost 21-35.

The highlights of the afternoon were Zach Kelso winning the boys race with a time of 18:55 and Fallon Bushee winning the girls race with a time of 24:01.

The team is scheduled to face Whittier next Monday and Greater Lawrence next Thursday.
