Weekly Sports Roundup, September 24-October 1
A look at all the sports action from Medford last week.

The Mustangs got off to a fast start on the gridiron this week, but a were the victims of several game-changing big plays, and failed to come up with the victory. Medford lost to Dedham, 20-6, despite Steven Moran’s 11-yard run in the second quarter, which, at the time, gave the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. Dedham’s Mikyle Hill scored three touchdowns of over 40 yards—two on the ground, and one through the air—as Medford had no answer for the explosive Dedham attack.
Medford is now 1-3 on the year, and will get back to the practice field to prepare for the challenge of North Andover on Oct. 7.

The Anchormen are now 4-0, and sitting atop the Catholic Central Small School standings, after a narrow 28-26 victory over nearby Matignon on Sept. 30.
Luke Hartnett scored the game-winning touchdown on a 17-yard interception return in the fourth quarter, as St. Clement came out ahead in a back and forth affair. Junior Oyancobi scored the game’s first touchdown, hauling in a 33-yard offering from Jamey Thompson in the first quarter. It would again be Oyancobi who put St. Clement ahead in the second quarter, with an 83-yard kickoff return that gave the Anchormen a 13-12 edge. After another Matignon score, making it 18-13 in their favor, Matthew Pereira broke a 26-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, which gave St. Clement a 21-18 lead after a 2-point conversion. Another Matignon score, and a 2-point conversion, left the Anchormen again down five, until Hartnett gave them the win with his interception.
Soccer
Medford High
Boys
The Mustangs have been off to a lightning fast start this season, and entered last week with a five-game winning streak, and a perfect 5-0 mark.
I’ve got some good news, and some bad news.
First the good. Medford powered its way to a 5-2 romp over East Boston on Sept. 28 in a non-league showdown. Jean Joseph netted a goal just three minutes into the game, but the Jets would equalize before the break. The second half saw Medford dominate the game, scoring four goals to seal the win. Erik Baptista, Matheus Anastacio, John Dumboya and Tenzin Choepak accounted for the Mustangs’ tallies.
Now for the bad news. After extending its season-opening winning streak to six games, Medford High suffered its first setback of the season on Sept. 30, falling to Greater Boston League foes Everett, 2-1.
Girls
The Medford High girls team blasted East Boston 6-0 on Sept. 28, behind two goals apiece from Korey O’Rourke Crowley and Olivia Timmins, along with Cassidy LeBert and Regine Jacques, who both added goals. The Mustangs next took on GBL rivals Everett at home on Sept. 30, and again coasted to victory, 4-1. Medford is now 7-2 overall, and 5-0 in league play.
Cross Country
Boys
The Medford boys cross country team suffered a tough 28-29 loss against Cambridge Rindge & Latin in a GBL contest on Sept. 28, despite a solid effort all around. Brian Bourne won, with Larry Keating, Anthony Totora, Kevin Andrew, Stephen Mahoney, Connor McGovern and Sean Napier all scoring for the Mustangs (1-1).
Girls
On the girls side of the track, the Mustangs had no more success against the Falcons of CRLS, falling 25-32. Medford is now 1-1, and despite the unfavorable result against Cambridge, the Mustangs are working hard and showing signs of improvement, in the words of head coach Lou Ruggiero. Leading the way against CRLS were Winny Kwong Sito, Justine Martignetti, Jolene McGlynn, Karina Barrett and freshman Ariana Buelto and Brianne Burke.
Golf
The Mustangs are 5-2 overall and 5-0 in the GBL after beating Everett 43-29 on Sept. 27 and picking up an away win over Malden on Sept. 28 by a 38-24 margin. Medford has three league matches left, and have their sights set on running the GBL table. The Mustangs were led in their victory over Malden by Corey Mortell and Jimmy Cecchini, both of whom posted solid wins.
Volleyball
St. Clement
The St. Clement girls volleyball team went 2-1 last week, picking up a 3-0 road win over Cristo Rey on Sept. 25, but falling to Lowell Catholic, 3-2, in Lowell on Sept. 27. Against Pope John on Sept. 29, St. Clement picked up its second win of the week with a 3-1 win.
