West Nile Virus Found In Medford Mosquitos

Here are some tips to avoid contracting the virus.

MEDFORD, MA — Mosquito traps in Medford recently tested positive for West Nile Virus, the city's board of health department announced Friday afternoon.

Officials say the risk of getting ill from the virus is low, but you can see how to take measures to protect yourself here or call 781-393-2560 with questions.

  • Limiting outdoor activities between dusk and dawn.
  • Wear along-sleeved shirt, long pants and socks
  • Use a [sic] that contains DEET or Picaridin. Products with permethrin should only be used on clothing. Always follow the directions on the label. Repellents should not be used on children younger than two months of age.
  • Make sure windows and door screens do not have holes in them.
  • Get rid of standing/stagnant water, where mosquitoes often can be found.
