Wet Weather Doesn't Slow Mustangs

The Mustangs weren't too badly affected by the wet weather last week, and most of the athletic schedule went ahead as planned. Here's a look at how the locals fared.

It's Three weeks into the spring season and Medford High has yet to have a week of sports untouched by inclement weather.

Rainy conditions scuttled much of the Mustang athletic schedule this week, but it wasn’t a complete washout.

Lacrosse, baseball and softball were all able to play this week. Here’s the rundown from around the athletic fields of Medford.

Baseball earns split

The week started rough for the Mustangs (5-1, 0-1 GBL) this week, as they fell 8-2 to Malden in the first meeting this year between the ultra-competitive neighbors.

The loss halted a four-game winning streak for Medford.

Chris Salvati and Tyler McLean knocked in the Mustangs’ runs on the afternoon. Salvati got the start and hurled four innings of one-run baseball before tiring and running into trouble.

The Mustangs hung an identical scoreline against non-league rivals Matignon on April 21, winning 8-2 at Playstead Park.

Softball meets immovable object in Malden’s Amos

Medford (5-1, 0-1 GBL) played just once last week, and the Mustangs saw their perfect start snapped by bitter Greater Boston League rivals Malden by a score of 6-1. Medford can take some solace in the fact that they lost against one of the top pitchers in the area, if not beyond, in Malden’s fireballing ace Kiara Amos.

Boys and girls lax on right track

The Medford girls lacrosse team kept its perfect record intact this past week playing three tough non-league games and going 2-1 on the week.

On April 19, the Mustangs began a two-game tour of the Merrimack Valley Conference, and succumbed 13-5 to a school whose name many people mistakenly believe begins with the phrase “MVC Champion,” in powerful Central Catholic.

The Mustangs trailed just 5-3 at the break, but a couple of second-half errors would be all the Raiders would need in terms of an invitation to pounce, and they effectively controlled the final frame to earn the win.

Olivia Timmins led the way with 3 goals and an assist, while Mady Forcier and Katherine Timmins also tallied in the losing effort.

On April 21 the Mustangs faced another MVC opponent in the Hillies of Haverhill and the result would turn out more to Medford’s liking.

With the score tied and Medford playing shorthanded due to penalties, the Mustangs answered the bell in a big way, stunning the home fans with an unlikely winner with just 48 seconds to play.

Senior Katie O’Brien eluded what head coach Matt Galusi characterized as “the entire Haverhill team,” and sent the Medford sideline into raptures with a brilliant winning goal, sealing an 11-10 win for the Mustangs.

Medford turned the momentum from its emotional win over Haverhill into another victory against Watertown on April 22.

The Mustangs earned a 14-5 decision over their non-league adversaries thanks in part to a superb effort from sister act Olivia and Katherine Timmins, who tallied 10 of Medford’s 14 goals.

On the boys side of the field, head coach Mike Engel’s squad split its two non-league matchups this past week, falling 12-5 to the potent Wakefield Warriors, and notching a convincing 11-3 win over Watertown.

Netminder Cam Howard has played extremely well all year for the Mustangs and that continued last week.
