A major eye infection put a premature end to the law enforcement career of Officer Jony the German Shepard, according to a statement from Melrose Police Department.
For the past eight years, Jony has been the lone member of the MPD’s K-9 Unit, and the department’s top specialist in olfactory narcotic and suspect detection.

“His skills supplement our officers’ skills, and he keeps them out of harm’s way,” said Police Cheif Michael L. Lyle. “The entire Department will miss Jony.”
Jony plans to enjoy civilian life in the company of his longtime partner and human, Officer Joseph H. Donovan.
