A Look at Melrose Through a Stats-Based Lens

Melrose’s master plan initiative, “Melrose Forward: A Community Vision and Master Plan,” held its first meeting last week.

The City’s master plan, first drafted in 2004, is intended to serve as a “base from which to realize residents’ wishes for the continued prosperity of their City and is intended to lend City officials, administrators, and community leaders support in their daily efforts to manage and shape Melrose’s growth into the future.”

In wake of the meeting, the City published several statistics based on the 2010 census.

Here’s the latest look at Melrose by the numbers:

Total population in 2010: 26,983

Median family income: $109,452
73% of the population over 25 years old has a bachelor’s or advanced degree.

The median age of Melrose residents is 41.3 years old

• 22% are under 18
• 18% are between 18 and 34
• 45% are between 35 and 64
• 16% are 65 and over

There are 11,213 households in Melrose as of 2010
Average household size (2013): 2.35 people

• 63% are family households
• 30% have children under 18
• 24% have seniors 65 and over
• 37% are non-family households
• 32% are single-person households

Racial and Ethnic Composition:

• 90% Non-Hispanic White
• 2.5% Hispanic/Latino
• 3.8% Asian
• 2.3% African-American
• 1.5% Two or More Races
