Medeiros Solano asks for your vote

My name is Monica Medeiros Solano and I am asking for your vote for Mayor of Melrose.

I love Melrose. I have grown up here. I have been a volunteer here, and I have served in public office as a School Committee Member, as a City Councilor for Ward Two and finally as a former City Councilor-at-Large for a total of 14 years of local elected service here in Melrose.

I am grateful for the opportunities Melrose has given me, and I am running for mayor to ensure the next generations have these same opportunities and more.

I have a strong history of advocating for more funding and better policies for Melrose at the state level as a three term past president of the Massachusetts Municipal Councillors’ Association, serving six years on the Mass Municipal Association Board of Directors and as a member of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Local Government, appointed by former Governor Charlie Baker who recently endorsed me in this campaign. As mayor I will leverage these relationships and continue to advocate for Melrose.

Professionally I bring with me a strong background in finance having worked in both public and private sectors. During the heart of the pandemic, I worked for the Town of Norwood as a Budget Management Analyst in the Purchasing Office of the General Manager and in Human Resources. I assisted the town in preparing for contract negotiation, working on COVID-19 issues, grant administration and procurement for all town departments including the schools, the municipal airport, light and broadband departments.

Most of my career has been in the private sector, more recently as Compliance Director at a nationwide commercial insurance company focused on providing insurance solutions for the energy industry. Prior to that, I worked in home financing for more than a decade, and I am also a licensed real estate salesperson.

I know this city. I have lived its past. I recognize where we have room for improvement especially around how we are managing our city finances and the responsiveness of our schools. As a former City Councilor, I was part of the team who helped Melrose recover from the drastic local aid cuts of the late 2000s and shape it into the beautiful, vibrant city it is today. Despite our current budget deficits, I believe I can help do it again.

As Mayor, I want to focus on what has brought so many people to Melrose and what has kept so many of us here. This means making sure that we have

• a well-run city that is fiscally responsible,
• excellent schools which push each student to reach their maximum potential regardless of their race, their ability or their socioeconomic status.
• a beautiful Melrose that is clean, that values our environment and cares for our infrastructure
• and a city that is open, inclusive and transparent that involves people in the decision-making process for decisions which affect them before they are made not just tells them about it afterward.

In this world of divisiveness and turmoil, I want to focus on what makes us special here in Melrose our sense of community and togetherness. I want to bring people together and foster that strong sense of community that I had growing up of neighbors helping neighbors.

Working together we really can have the best Melrose yet.
