Melrose Police Help Residents Fight Back Against Addiction
Melrose Police will host a community meeting on opioids to provide information to those struggling with the disease of addiction.

MELROSE, MA—As the Commonwealth throws a stiff jab at the opioid epidemic, Melrose police are educating the public on how to do the same.
The Melrose police are holding another monthly community meeting, with a focus on providing information and resources for those struggling with addiction. The meeting will feature Michael Duggan from Wicked Sober, who will share his personal testimony.
"During this month's meeting we're going to take an in depth look at the current status of our city pertaining to opioid use and the resources available to residents looking to recover from their addiction," Chief Lyle said in an announcement. "This is certainly a fantastic opportunity for folks to find out more information surrounding the disease of addiction."

According to the most recent data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Melrose had nine opioid-related overdose deaths between 2012 and 2014. In addition, the number of deaths across the Commonwealth has gradually increased since the year 2000, as the death toll rose from 338 in 2000 to 1,173 estimated deaths in 2014.
Chief Lyle will also be overviewing the city's crime statistics related to overdoses. Detective Greg Forestell, Detective Sgt. Paul McNamara and a representative from the New England Field Division of the DEA will also be available to answer questions.

The session will be held on March 30 from 6 to 8 pm at the Melrose Senior Center.
