MELROSE, MA — The woman who drove into a pizza shop in a busy area Sunday evening will not face charges or a citation after police determined it was her footwear that caused the crash. Sgt. Jonathan Goc told Patch the driver told police she got her sandal stuck in the pedals, causing her to accelerate from Pleasant Street into Theo's Pizzeria & Deli on West Wyoming Ave.

Goc said the woman was not texting and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Since the only injury was to the woman — minor ones at that — and insurance should cover damage to the building, police aren't pursuing charges.

"There is certainly no law to driving with sandals, but it's something we would advise against," Goc said.

It was a small miracle no one else was hurt. The area of West Wyoming, next to the train tracks and with a couple restaurants and an ice cream shop, had a lot of foot traffic at the time of the crash on an early summer night

Police did not identify the woman but said she was a local resident who admitted to being at fault.

"Overall this is chalked up to an unfortunate accident," Goc said.

Theo's has since reopened.
