MILFORD, MA- A teen from Milford is facing several charges including operating under the influence of alcohol after he crashed into a utility pole, splitting it in half, according to police.

On Sunday morning, police were called to Purchase Street for a reported crash between a utility pole and a car. When they got on scene they found the pole had been hit so hard that it was cut in half, according to the police report.

The driver, 19-year-old Jose Castro, appeared unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol, according to police. After he was checked by fire and EMS crews, police asked him for his license. According to the report, he had trouble getting his wallet out of his pocket and once he did he handed officers and Ecuadorian identification card. After running his name through the system, police could not find a license status. Castro repeatedly lost his balance while officers spoke to him- he was arrested for OUI.

Officers found an open bottle of beer in Castro's car that was still cold "as if it was just removed from the refrigerator," according to the police report. A field sobriety test was conducted at the station by a Spanish-speaking officer since Castro's English was limited- he failed the test.

Castro was charged with OUI, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, person under 21 in possession of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
