Natick Inventor Needs Your Votes [VIDEO]

Natick inventor Lisa McDonough aims to win Walmart's Get on the Shelf Contest with her RustRing Blocker, designed to prevent shaving cream cans from staining surfaces.

It's a simple, but aggravating problem anyone with a can of shaving cream has ever faced—that annoying ring of rust that the cans will leave on bathtubs, counters and medicine cabinets. One Natick mom has invented a solution, but she needs America's votes to get her product on the shelves.

Lisa McDonough, a former software developer turned stay-at-home mom, has entered her RustRing Blocker into the Walmart Get on the Shelf Contest in the hopes that her invention will be chosen out of 1,800 finalists, narrowed down from more than 3,000 entries across the country.

The RustRing Blocker, which McDonough has been working to perfect for the last two years, is a silicone cap for the bottom of your everyday shaving cream and air freshener cans that creates a tight seal to keep water out and rust in so it doesn't stain surfaces. The raised, non-slip bottom keeps the can in place and prevents soap scum from accumulating. The RustRing Blocker comes in several colors and soon, in multiple sizes. There are similar products in stores, but none create the tight seal her product offers, she said, adding she's tried them all to try to solve her rust dilemma.

In the beginning, McDonough tried to sell her invention in small local stores like Natick's , but wanted to try to reach a wider audience. Soon after, larger companies like Bed Bath & Beyond and Target began encouraging aspiring inventors to come up with unique products they could offer in their stores.

"It seems like there's a trend towards what America always was—we were inventors," said McDonough, whose patent is pending. "They always say people come up with new ideas during recessions. A lot of people loose their their jobs and they try new ideas that they've had since college or high school. People have downtime to do things, so they follow their dreams."

Between March 7 and April 3, anyone can visit the Get on the Shelf Contest page, view the videos entrants submitted explaining their products, and vote for their favorite. At the end of the first round, the entries will be whittled down to just 10 that will compete for the win.
