Following Fatal Crash, It's Anything But Normal At Needham HS

Needham Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Gutekanst said Monday was not a normal school day for students and staff.

NEEDHAM, MA — A somber mood was cast over Needham High School Monday as students returned to class for the first time since the death of two juniors at the school.

Talia Newfield and Adrienne Garrido died over the weekend after they were struck by a car near the high school Saturday night. Superintendent Daniel Gutekanst said class is in session, but the day was not a normal school day.

“The entire Needham community is mourning the loss of two loving, athletic, energetic, and caring daughters, sisters, and friends,” Gutekanst told reporters Monday morning. “Many students knew the girls and are upset about the loss of dear friends, and others were not as familiar with the girls but know that their friends and teachers are aching.

A growing memorial has been created at the scene of the crash. Students and mourners have placed flowers, photos, and a collage of the girls just outside the high school. Students have stopped by the tribute to their friends throughout the day to mourn. Inside, teachers, guidance counselors, grief counselors and staff are attending to the needs of the students, Gutekanst said.

“It’s tough up there right now, there’s certainly is a full range of emotion that kids are experiencing but the staff is really doing a great job of embracing their kids. It’s a tough scene,” he said.

The deaths have affected those outside Needham High School as well. Needham Police Chief John Schlittler said Sunday that he will have grief councilors for his officers, who were part of the public safety response.

The crash remains under investigation. Charges have not been filed, but investigators said Sunday that the driver at the scene stopped and they are focusing on two drivers.
