Needham Man Killed While Assisting Son on Icy Road
Police say the man was struck by a vehicle while helping his son.
NEEDHAM, MA — A Needham man was trying to help his son when he was struck and killed by a vehicle on an icy road by a vehicle Wednesday morning, the most tragic of a morning full of accidents around the state.
At about 7 a.m., Needham police and fire responded to a report of a vehicle that struck a person near Brookline Street and Greendale Avenue.
Police say the victim, 63-year-old Joseph Flynn, was assisting his son, whose car was involved in a crash on Brookline Street. Flynn was struck when another vehicle on the road, operated by a 40-year-old Needham man, slid on the ice and was unable to stop before striking the victim and pinning him between the two vehicles, police say.

A 55-car pileup on Route 128 in Wakefield resulted in several injuries, but State Police said none were believed to be serious. About 30 of the roughly 55 vehicles involved had to be towed. The scene was cleared shortly after 9 a.m., but traffic was backed up for miles.
Needham police are investigating the crash with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police and Norfolk District Attorney's office.
