A portion of the West Suburban YMCA’s parking lot has been transformed into a supervised skate park that is scheduled to open to the public free of charge on Monday, July 16th. The park, made possible with funding from the US Department of Education Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant to the Newton Public Schools/Newton Partnership, will be open Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 8:00 pm until the end of August.
The skate park is supervised by West Suburban YMCA staff who will also offer free beginner lessons from 3:30-4:30 pm daily, weather permitting. From 12:00 to 3:00 pm, the park is open for children ages 12 and under (participants must be accompanied by an adult). During this time, participants are free to use scooters, razors, in-line skates and skateboards. After 3:00 pm, the park is open for all ages but scooters or razors are not allowed. Equipment and protective gear will also be available.
Skaters must wear protective gear at all times and check in at the Y’s front desk to get access to the park daily. Parents or guardians must sign a waiver (available at the Y’s front desk or for download on their website) prior to using the facilities for the first time.
