Anti-Pipeline Tax Activists to Hold Informational Action in Newton

The action is being held in a series in communities to inform residents about the implications of a potential tariff on electricity.

NEWTON, MA - A group of activists will hold an informational action at the Newton Free Library this Saturday in protest of a proposed tariff that would impose taxes on electricity to fund the construction of natural gas pipelines.

The organization, who call themselves 350 Mass for a Better Future, will present a mock electric bill that highlights the negative economical and environmental effects of the tariff.

The proposal would allow utility companies to tax consumers in order to pay for the construction of pipelines. Those who support it say that the cost of new or expanded pipelines would be counteracted by having more gas flow into the area, according to the Boston Globe.

But opponents of the tariff have one influential figure in their corner - Attorney General Maura Healey, whose office opposed the Baker administration in court earlier this month.

350 Mass for a Better Future will also hold demonstrations in Boston, Cambridge, Holyoke, Lowell, Medford, Orleans, Weymouth and Worcester on Saturday.
