NEWTON, MA — The City Council voted to maintain the Newton Centre Plaza through the end of October during its most recent meeting.

Former Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced in January 2025 that a portion of the Langley’s Place Parking Lot on the corner of Centre Street and Beacon Street would be transformed into a fully furnished plaza with features such as nighttime lighting, lawn and board games, and community artwork.

Newton’s Chief Operating Officer John Morse and Chief Community Services Officer John Rice wrote to the council asking for an extension to the popular location while they work to establish a permanent one within the Newton Center Green to the west of the Langley parking lot. One goal of building this permanent location nearby is to reopen the parking spaces the current plaza is occupying.

“The idea of a gathering place for people to order take-out and eat outside, meet friends, play games and just relax in Newton Centre is great,” Mayor Marc Laredo said. The idea of taking up parking spaces in close proximity to many businesses may not be.”

According to Morse and Rice, it would also preserve trees and plants.

“We believe that we can create something very special for our businesses, their patrons, and the entire community. As stated in the Public Safety and Transportation Committee, this plaza would be fully accessible,” the pair said in a joint statement to the council. “Should the plaza need to be removed from the parking lot before the end of the trial, the Parks and Recreation Commissioner can permit the placement of the tables and chairs on the Green while we continue to work with the residents, businesses, City Council, and Parks and Recreation Commission on the final solution.”

After a successful summer season for the plaza, the city’s Planning Department worked with local marketing firm All Over Newton to create an online community resource page that shows residents at the plaza the 36 restaurants, 25 retail stores, and 29 salons and spas that are nearby to the location.
