Boys and Girls Club Introduces High School Only Fridays

Friday Night Fun For High School Teens

[Newton, MA] – September 17, 2015 – The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton kicks off a rotating schedule of High School Only Nights on Friday, October 30, 2015 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Club Teen Director Betsy Tyer says, “Newton’s teenagers have spoken and we have listened. They want an affordable night out in a safe place where they can gather with friends and do their own thing. With a comfortable, vibrant teen center, a first class gymnasium, and a caring team of counselors schooled in the art of fun, our Club is uniquely appointed to meet their needs.”

Without elementary and middle school members in the mix, the entire Club will be open for older teens to enjoy. Activities will rotate through the gym, teen center, art room, and social recreation areas with new opportunities each week. The October 30th kickoff event will feature ‘Glow Stick Hide-N-Go-Seek’, a piñata smash, and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament. Snacks and drinks are available for a minimal fee. Every time they visit the Club, teens make their own choices and can participate in as much or as little as they want.

The Club has always enjoyed a robust population of teens thanks to their successful intramural sports programs, but it was not until 1999 that a separate center was established. Since then 40 to 60 teens have visited the Club each day throughout the school year. The Club is proud of its track record as the most successful and longest running Teen Center in the City of Newton. Our High School members told us what they wanted, we listened, and we are pleased to offer these new programs. Executive Director David Sellers explains, “The plan started with expanding our hours until 10:00 PM. Thanks to overwhelming interest, it was decided that all programs for younger children were rescheduled to other times during the week.”

According to Club Member Caleb Butler, “Everything about these events has been teen-driven. The specific activities, schedules, and the pricing were selected for teens by teens.” Kindred Keystone, the High School Youth Leadership Program, is hosting the October 30th event and will benefit from the proceeds.

Teen Nights will be open to any Newton resident who has a valid High School picture ID. There will be a $5 door fee for all who attend.
