Newton Community Education invites you to join us in the Celebration of Baseball:
Jamie Demarest is a sixth grade language arts teacher at Day Middle School and has taught sixth grade in the Newton Public Schools for 24 years. As a child, Jamie happened upon a charismatic old man on his morning paper route, who, as it turns out, was a prominent black pitcher in the days before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. Thus began a lifelong interest in the barnstorming days of baseball in the first half of the 20th century. Come hear about the myths and realities of life on the road, the Negro Leagues, and the infectious sandlot baseball culture which was so important to neighborhoods everywhere in the black and white communities.
