Local Nonprofit Helps Make A Meaningful Mother’s Day
A meaningful Mother's Day gift that helps struggling mothers and families transitioning from shelters.

Local nonprofit Furnishing Hope is providing a very special way to help struggling mothers, through a Mother’s Day gift that will provide families with much needed home goods and/or furniture.
Furnishing Hope of Massachusetts, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides furniture and home goods to families transitioning from homeless and domestic violence shelters.
This year Furnishing Hope has launched a new Mother’s Day gift program—Honor a Mother by Helping a Mother to Start Over—allowing members of the community to buy “starter sets” for kitchen, bedroom, or bathroom. These starter sets are provided to mothers and their families as they transition from a homeless or domestic violence shelter. Community members also have the opportunity to provide the support for a family’s “full furnishing,” including bedroom, kitchen and living room furniture, with home delivery and set-up, along with all three starter sets.
Why is this important? Said Furnishing Hope Executive Director Suzy Palitz:
“We've walked into apartments and seen nothing but large black plastic garbage bags filled with a family’s belongings. We've seen the mother of school-aged twins who had been living in an apartment for over a year with only one mattress, no dresser and no light source in the bedrooms. We’ve seen the family of five—a mom and four children—whose only furniture were two chairs; their ‘bed’ consisted of blankets and clothing spread over their living room floor. These kind of conditions are particularly hard on children who have already gone through extreme periods of instability and stress. And for the mothers, it’s terribly difficult for them to feel that they cannot provide the basics for their children. What better Mother’s Day gift than to know you will ease another mother’s mind?”

Furnishing Hope of Massachusetts collects and refurbishes furniture, as well as gently-used home goods, with the help of volunteers and provides them free of charge to families identified by their social service agency partners, including The Second Step, a Newton-based agency working with domestic violence survivors.
