Newton Local Awarded $1.2 M in Grant Funds to Further Research on Wireless Networking

Tommaso Melodia, a Newton resident, received funding to advance his research on wireless networking.

Tommaso Melodia, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University’s College of Engineering, was awarded a total of $1.2 million in national grant funding to further develop his research on wireless networks.

Melodia received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Office of Naval Research, the Office of Secretary of Defense/Andro Computational Solutions and the Massachusetts Technology Transfer. These grants support research projects that involve the creation and development of: a new operating system for cellular wireless networks; wireless networking techniques to be used in contested environments; and new wireless, implantable medical devices with ultrasonic networking and recharging capabilities.

Melodia received his laurea degree in 2001 and doctorate degree in 2005 in telecommunications engineering from the University of Rome La Sapienza, and received his Ph.D. in 2007 in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He joined Northeastern University in 2014.
