Newton Native Mark Rothman to Participate in HopeWalks at Newton-Wellesley Hospital

Annual Event on Sunday October 4 to Benefit Support Services at Vernon Cancer Center WCVB TV 5 Anchor Phil Lipof to Emcee

Two years ago, 53 year old Newton native Mark Rothman was an avid cyclist, in great physical shape. Then came the diagnosis of throat cancer, handing him a 40% chance to live.

Mark’s journey began with surgery to remove the throat tumor and 15 lymph nodes, along with 35 days of radiation and chemotherapy. Mark lost his ability to swallow, eat solid foods, and talk. That was two years ago. This weekend, he’ll be back at Newton-Wellesley Hospital- but this time he’ll be participating in HopeWalks.

“I have a new outlook on life and try to make every day special,” said Mark. “My incredible team at Newton-Wellesley kept me reaching for hope. My nurse navigator handled every detail, coordinating PT and nutrition appointments, meditation classes, and more.”

The HopeWalks route will begin and end at the hospital and all ages are welcome. Check-in will begin at 9:00 AM, with opening ceremonies starting at 9:30 AM. The walk will then set-off at 10:00 AM.
